How to Make Wire Haunted House Trees

I have slowly been building pieces for for my Halloween village, which started with the handmade chipboard houses that I shared with you a couple of weeks ago. Whenever I make crafts, I try to reuse supplies to save money, because it’s the little amounts of money that really destroy budgets. When I made the chipboard houses, I used the backing from an empty paper pad. When I went to the store to get the craft supplies that I did not have, I looked for tiny Halloween trees, which I couldn’t find. I started thinking through all the supplies that I had at home and decided I could easily make these Halloween trees with supplies I already had at home.

When I made the air dry clay mushrooms, I used floral wire and there was plenty of wire leftover. All I needed was black crepe paper…but I could have used the white crepe paper that I used on the mushrooms and painted it black. To keep the trees simple though, I got the black crepe paper. Aside from some tools, you need 3 craft supplies to make these tiny trees: wire, crepe paper and fast setting craft glue.

Don’t be like me and commandeer tools that are meant for a very specific purpose. I used electrical wire cutters for this project so now I need to order replacements for the toolbox. The electrical wire cutters had actually been used for other things long before I made these trees, but just know, you should only use electrical wire cutters for materials listed on the pliers. These handmade armature trees, are quite easy to make and they don’t take long to complete.

These mini spooky trees can be used in a Halloween version of a Christmas village or you can use them as part of another project. We have a written tutorial below, however we also have a video that we shared over on our Instagram page. Most of the crafts we share here on the blog are often posted in conjunction with a Reel on Instagram. We hope that you like these tiny haunted house trees – if you make them, share them on Instagram and tag us so we can see and share your creations!

Equipment

  • Wire cutters
  • Two pairs of pliers
  • Small paint brush

Materials

  • Black crepe paper trimmed to about 1 1/2" long
  • Fast setting craft glue
  • Floral wire

Instructions

  • Cut 6 pieces of wire approximately 4 inches long.
  • Even out the wires and clamp them together with a pair of pliers.
  • Using the free pair of pliers, twist the wire together. You will want to get about 1 inches twisted together.
  • Bend the wires that are at the bottom of the tree up towards the trunk and twist them around the trunk to further secure the wires and to get rid of the pointy ends.
  • Trim the width of the crepe paper pieces to the length of the branches.
  • Separate the branches. Add glue to one branch at a time and begin wrapping crepe paper around branch.
  • Add glue to length of crepe paper so that it stays in place as you wrap.
  • Add a dap of glue to crepe paper edge and the tip of the branch.
  • To give it a more spooky look, hold inner end of the branch and twist crepe paper in the direction that you wrapped it around the wire.
  • Repeat on all branches.
  • Allow to dry.
  • Once dry, trim wires to the size that you need and any ends of wire that didn't get covered in crepe paper.
  • Twist and bend the branches to give it more of a creepy tree look.

Notes

If some of the glue dries white, just touch it up with black craft paint.
